Inspired by the pedagogy of early years pioneer Friedrich Froebel and his influence on the Bauhaus movement, Our play, Our party, Our work! celebrated the first Changing Play residency at the Portman Early Childhood Centre with The Invisible Spaces of Parenthood artists.

Changing Play is the Serpentine Galleries three year project exploring aspects of play through long-term engagement with children aged 0-5 and their families in Westminster. Through their residency Andrea and Kim explored the ‘Gifts’ of Friedrich Frobel with children, parents and staff from the Portman Early Childhood Centre as a starting point for their research into creating non-gendered and open-ended resources for families.

Artist Joceline Howe developed a series of site specific fabric pieces, metallic circles and graphic lines to form a conversation with the colourful shapes. Joceline’s work is part of Haus Of. an open-ended research project investigating spaces between dance, performance and film. Dance artist Nefeli Skarmea choreographed a series of collaborative, open-ended dances to animate the shapes throughout the day.

The Serpentine Galleries have signed up to the Family Arts Standards. We welcome families and to help you enjoy your experience we are committed to ensuring we meet these Standards. More information for visiting the Serpentine Galleries with your Family
